Engine oil change: capacities, the drain-plug law, and LL-01 honesty
The factory oil service for N54/N55/B58 — 6.5 litre capacities with filter, the 25 Nm drain plug with new sealing ring, overfill warnings, and the straight story on oil approvals.
The most routine job in the book still has factory specifics worth keeping straight: a hot-oil rule, a drain plug that replaces its sealing ring every time, an overfill warning the documents repeat like a drumbeat, and a capacities table our data carries per engine. Here is the oil service the way ISTA writes it.
Capacities, from the technical-data documents
| Engine | Oil change with filter element | Source |
|---|---|---|
| N54 (E82/E88/E89) | 6.5 litres | 11 40 Oil Supply technical data |
| N55 | 6.5 litres | 11 40 Oil Supply technical data |
| B58 | 6.5 litres | B58 procedure document (filling capacity, level check) |
| S55 | 6.5 litres (sump 6.0 + filter 0.5) | covered in our oil-system-priming guide |
The overfill warning in every version of the drain-and-fill procedure is the one to respect: engine damage caused by overfilling — it is written as a risk-of-damage callout, not a suggestion. Fill to the capacity number, run, settle, and correct the level on the dipstick/level sensor, not to the optimism line on the jug.
The drain plug: 25 Nm and a new ring, every time
| Engine | Plug | Torque | Rule |
|---|---|---|---|
| N54 | M12 x 1.5 | 25 Nm (18.4 lb-ft) | Replace sealing ring |
| N55 | M12 x 1.5 | 25 Nm (18.4 lb-ft) | Replace sealing ring |
| S55 (magnesium sump) | M16 x 1.5 | 20 Nm (14.8 lb-ft) | Replace screw with sealing ring |
| S55 (aluminium sump) | M16 x 1.5 | 25 Nm (18.4 lb-ft) | Renew the sealing ring |
The S55's two-sump story is a real factory split — the magnesium sump's plug is a replace-with-ring part at 20 Nm; the aluminium sump runs 25 Nm with a renewed ring. Guessing between them on an S55 is how a magnesium sump gets ruined; the torque tables keep them straight.
- **Bring the oil to operating temperature** — the service document states engine oil temperature above 70 °C for the service. Hot oil drains; warm oil dawdles.
- Open the filler cap, position the catch vessel, and open the drain plug. The document adds the disposal line: catch and dispose of the used oil per your local regulations.
- **Let it drip off fully** — the procedure's own instruction, not impatience management.
- While it drains: the filter. Release the cap with the factory wrench (`11 9 240`), swap the element, **renew the O-ring and coat it with engine oil**, and confirm the element engages audibly in the cap. Torque the cap to 25 Nm — the number lives in our oil-filter-housing guide's table with the rest of the housing set.
- New sealing ring on the plug, 25 Nm (your engine's row above), fill to capacity, run, settle, and verify the level.
LL-01 honesty
What the factory documents actually say about which oil: "Oil grades and consumption: see recommended engine oils for BMW Group engines" — the approval list is a referenced document, not a specification printed in the service procedure, and our extract does not carry the approvals list itself. So the honest chain of custody for your fill:
- The recommended-engine-oils document governs approvals — that is where LL-01 (and its successors like LL-22 FE+ for newer engines) live. Use an oil the list approves for your engine and market.
- The engine does not know marketing; it knows viscosity class, approval, and change interval. The B58 procedure's own sign-language is the underhood label: "Only fill in approved engine oil with the correct (SAE) viscosity class."
- The LL-01-was-quietly-killed internet saga is a story about BMW's list evolving and oils being reformulated to newer specs — real history, zero bearing on whether your approved-for-your-engine oil is correct. The list is the law; the forum thread is not.
For tuned cars and ethanol blends, the oil conversation changes (fuel dilution, shear), and that is tuning-side knowledge — our E85 guide covers the fuel side. The factory's service documents stay specification-silent beyond the approvals reference, and so does this page.
Coverage notes
What the data carries: capacities with filter per engine, the drain-and-fill procedure with its temperature and disposal notes, per-engine drain-plug torques with the sealing-ring rules (including the S55's two-sump split), the filter element and O-ring discipline, and the overfill warnings. What it does not carry: the approvals list itself (referenced, not included), brand recommendations, or extended-interval guidance — CBS owns intervals, and a tuned car's oil life is shorter than any calculator. Used-oil analysis is the honest way to set your own interval; the documents just set the floor.
Every number above traces to the ISTA document ids in the sources.
FAQ
- **6.5 litres exactly?** The technical-data number for an oil change *with* filter element. The dipstick/level sensor is the final authority after a run-and-settle — capacities are the starting point, not a bypass.
- **Do I really need a new drain plug sealing ring?** Every torque table above says replace/renew it. It is the cheapest gasket on the car and the only one holding the sump's contents against your garage floor.
- **What's the filter cap torque?** 25 Nm, with a renewed, oil-coated O-ring — the full filter-housing torque set is in our OFH guide.
- **Can I run a longer interval with good oil?** The documents define the service, not your risk tolerance. High-load tuned use argues shorter, not longer; used-oil analysis turns that argument into data.
