Fluids and capacities bible: every fill number, honestly split
The fluids reference for N54, N55, S55, B58: oil capacities with the LL-01 honesty, coolant volumes and test pressures, gearbox and diff honesty, tank reserves — factory-cited or labeled.
Every fluid these platforms swallow, one page, with the honesty law applied throughout: the capacities and pressures below are factory-cited; the grades our extract does not carry are routed with their label on. The engine-specific guides own the procedures — this page owns the numbers, and the cross-links at each table say where the procedure lives.
Engine oil — the capacity table, every carried row
| Engine / chassis | Oil change with filter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| N54 — E60/E61, E70 xi, E82/E88/E89, E90–E93, F01/F02 | 6.5 litres | identical across every chassis row the data carries |
| N55 | 6.5 litres | same figure, its own documents |
| S55 | 6.5 litres (6.0 sump + 0.5 filter) | the split matters — the sump drains alone |
| B58 revision 0 | 6.5 litres | all chassis |
| B58 revision 1, rear-wheel drive | 6.5 litres | M and O output |
| B58 revision 1, all-wheel drive | 7.0 litres (M output) / 7.2 litres (O output) | the xDrive sump rows people miss |
| B58 revision 2 (G70) | 6.75 litres | the newest carried row |
The overfill warning is the loudest line in every version of the procedure — engine damage caused by overfilling, written as a risk callout, not a footnote. The law that follows: the capacity is the starting point, the level sensor after a run-and-settle is the authority. The drain torques (25 Nm M12x1.5 N54/N55 with a new ring; S55 20/25 Nm by sump; filter caps 25 Nm) live in the torque-specs-master-index; the LL-01 honesty and interval law live in the engine-oil-change-guide.
Engine oil grades — the honest split
What the factory layer carries: an approvals reference — "see recommended engine oils for BMW Group engines" — and nothing brand-shaped. What it does not carry: the approvals list itself (referenced, not included), any viscosity table by climate, or extended-interval guidance — intervals on these cars are condition-based (CBS), calculated off fuel burned and duty, not a sticker. Our verdict, labeled ours: LL-01 remains the honest default for stock-tune street duty; a tuned or tracked car earns its oil change by analysis, not by calendar. The revision loop owns that discipline.
Coolant — volumes per chassis, the test ceiling, the bleed law
| Chassis | Coolant volume (heating + A/C) | MT / AT |
|---|---|---|
| N54 E90–E93 | 8.2 / 8.4 litres | with integrated A/C |
| N54 E82/E88 | 8.2 / 8.4 litres | N54T: 10.4 litres both |
| N54 E60/E61 | 10.0 / 10.4 litres | with integrated A/C |
| Repair top-up quantity (any carried chassis) | 2.0 litres | after thermostat R&R / opened hoses |
| Test point | Value | Chassis |
|---|---|---|
| Cooling system test pressure (excess) | 1.5 bar | E60/E61, E90–E93, E82/E88 |
| Radiator/cap test pressure (excess) | 1.5–2.0 bar | E89 1.5 / E70-E71 2.0 |
| Cap pressure-relief valve opens | 1.4 +0.1/−0.2 bar (E89) / 2.0 +0.1/−0.2 bar (E70/E71) | over ambient |
The 1.5 bar test ceiling is a leak-finder, not a strength contest — the relief-valve rows are why: the cap is already designed to vent in that neighborhood, and a test that pops the cap has taught you nothing. The mixture ratio and coolant part specification are referenced by the procedures but not carried in our extract — the honest fill is the long-life coolant your chassis documents call for, mixed per its own label. The bleed law and the vacuum-filling honesty live in the coolant-service-and-bleeding-guide: after component work the factory writes the system must be filled with a vacuum filling unit, with the bleed as the confirmation pass.
Gearbox and diff — the honesty table
| Fluid | What the factory layer carries | The honest grade answer |
|---|---|---|
| GS7D36SG 6-speed manual (N54/N55, E92/E93/E89) | initial fill 7.8 litres; grade routed to "operating fluids specifications" | not carried in our extract — community GL-4-class fill, labeled community; fill to the level plug |
| Automatic gearboxes (6HP behind N54/N55, 8HP behind B58) | no capacity or grade rows in our extract | ZF's own Lifeguard program (LG 6 for the 6HP era, LG 8-family for 8HP) is the vendor-documented standard — labeled community/vendor, because our factory extract does not carry it. "Lifetime fill" is a marketing sentence; the boxes have fill and level procedures and the community consensus is interval changes |
| Differentials | nothing carried | the community standard is GL-5 75W-140-class for the turbo six rear ends (many with limited-slip additive per the diff's own plate) — labeled community, and your diff's tag is the authority |
Per the factory data we hold: this is the section where the extract is thinnest, and the wiki says so rather than dressing community numbers in factory clothes. Where a number below appears elsewhere in the wiki it is either factory-cited or carries its label — no third category exists.
Fuel — tank volumes and the low-pressure test point
| Chassis | Tank volume / reserve |
|---|---|
| N54 E90–E93 | 63 / 8 litres |
| N54 E82, E88 | 53 / 8 litres |
| N54 F01/F02 | 82 / 12 litres |
| N54 E71 (X6) | 85 / 8 litres |
| Low-pressure fuel system test (N54) | 5.0 bar ± 0.2 |
The 5-bar row is the leak-down point for the low-pressure side — the bookend test to the HPFP and LPFP diagnostics in the lpfp-upgrade-guide. Fuel grade honesty: the minimum-octane rows live in the sales-data layer our extract does not carry; the tuned-car answer is your tune's, not the tank sticker's.
Washer, brake, A/C — the remaining honest rows
Brake fluid: the service procedures reference the operating-fluids specification for the fluid itself, which our extract does not carry — the community standard (DOT 4-class, the low-viscosity DOT 4 LV family on the B58-era cars, replaced on a two-year clock) is labeled community. The flush discipline and the bleed sequence belong to your chassis's brake documents; the battery-registration-guide owns the electrical half of that visit. Washer and A/C refrigerant capacities: the A/C layer of our extract carries system-oil and refrigerant rows for some chassis (the E8x/E9x N54 row exists in the climate group) — those belong to the A/C service conversation, and we do not quote them where the validity is not engine-specific. This page's law is the same as the spec sheets': every number carries its citation or its label.

How much oil does an N54 or N55 take?
6.5 litres with the filter element, every chassis the factory data carries. The S55 is also 6.5 litres but splits 6.0 sump + 0.5 filter. The B58 is 6.5 litres on rear-wheel-drive cars and 7.0–7.2 litres on xDrive revision-1 sumps.
How much coolant does an N54 take?
8.2 litres (manual) or 8.4 litres (automatic) on E90–E93 and E82/E88 with heating and A/C; the E60/E61 and the N54T E82/E88 carry 10.0–10.4 litres. Repairs that open the system carry a 2.0-litre top-up quantity.
What oil goes in a BMW GS6 manual gearbox behind the N54?
The factory capacity document carries the 7.8-litre initial fill but routes the grade to the operating-fluids specification, which our extract does not include. The community standard for this box is a GL-4 75W-80-style fluid — labeled community, not factory-cited. Fill to the level plug, never to a volume.
Is LL-01 still the right oil spec for these engines?
LL-01 is the long-life approval these engines were built around and the honest default for a stock-tune street car. LL-17 FE+ replaced it in later factory documentation for newer engines; on an N54/N55/B58 that runs hard or tuned, a shorter change interval beats chasing the label — the factory data carries the approvals reference, not brand lists.
