N54 spec sheet: every factory number on one page
The complete N54 factory data on one page: compression, bearing grades and clearances, ring gaps, valve dimensions, oil and coolant capacities, pressures, fastener torques — every row factory-cited.
One page, every number the factory data carries for the N54, each row cited to the technical-data document that owns it. This is the page to have open on the bench: the identity block for what the engine is, the wear limits for what it's allowed to become, the pressure floors for what it must hold, and the fastener table for the torque at every step. Job context lives in the guide that owns each job — this sheet owns the numbers, and links to them.
Engine identity — 11 00 technical data
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Cylinders | 6, inline |
| Bore | 84.0 mm |
| Stroke | 89.6 mm |
| Effective displacement | 2979 cm³ |
| Compression ratio | 10.2 : 1 |
| Max. permissible engine speed | 7000 rpm |
| Permissible constant speed | 6550 rpm |
| Compression pressure | 14...16 bar |
| Max. deviation, all cylinders | 2 bar |
Two engines, one set of numbers: the N54 and N54T (the later 335is/1M/Z4 35is output state) share every row above — the technical data documents them together, and the tables on this page carry no split between them. The compression row belongs to a warm engine with all plugs out and the throttle open; the per-cylinder deviation limit is the more diagnostic number of the two.
Block and bores — 11 11 technical data
| Measurement | Value |
|---|---|
| Bore Ø stage 0 (new or rework) | 84.000 +0.02 mm |
| Bore Ø stage 1 (oversize) | 84.250 +0.02 mm |
| Permitted out-of-round | 0.01 mm |
| Permitted conicity | 0.01 mm |
| Piston-to-cylinder total wear tolerance (operated) | 0.15 mm |
The factory carries exactly two bore stages — new and one oversize — and no machining data beyond them. A worn block past stage 1's fit is a replacement-block conversation, not a grind; that is the factory data's shape, not our opinion. The bore guides the rebuild-overview conversation.
Crankshaft, bearings, end play — 11 21 technical data
| Measurement | Value |
|---|---|
| Main bearing radial clearance | 0.020–0.046 mm |
| Rod bearing radial clearance | 0.025–0.070 mm |
| Crankshaft end play (axial) | 0.060–0.250 mm |
| Main journal (1–6) grade S1 | 55.998–55.993 mm |
| Main journal (1–6) grade S2 | 55.992–55.987 mm |
| Main journal (1–6) grade S3 | 55.986–55.981 mm |
| Guide journal (7) grade S1 | 64.998–64.993 mm |
| Guide journal (7) grade S2 | 64.992–64.987 mm |
| Guide journal (7) grade S3 | 64.986–64.981 mm |
| Guide (thrust) bearing grinding stages | 24.0 / 24.2 / 24.4 mm (F8 tolerance) |
The journal grades are a selection system — the block and crank are graded at the factory and shells are picked to match, which is why the color-classification law exists. Undersize service stages beyond these grades are not carried in the technical data; if your machine shop proposes a grind, the factory's numbers stop here and their spec sheet takes over. The rod-and-main-bearings guide walks that whole decision.
Rods, pistons, rings — 11 24 / 11 25 technical data
| Measurement | Value |
|---|---|
| Rod bolt | M9, replace, wash and oil — 20 Nm + 70° + 70° |
| Piston Ø at measuring point A (15 mm), new | 83.95–83.97 mm |
| Piston Ø oversize (for bore stage 1) | 84.20–84.22 mm |
| Piston and pin | paired to each other — replace together only |
| Install clearance, new | 0.00–0.03 mm |
| Install clearance, worn limit | 0.02–0.08 mm |
| 1st ring end gap | 0.18–0.33 mm |
| 1st ring side clearance | 0.020–0.060 mm |
| 2nd ring end gap | 0.30–0.50 mm |
| 2nd ring side clearance | 0.020–0.060 mm |
| Oil scraper ring end gap | 0.20–0.90 mm |
| Oil scraper side clearance | cannot be measured (two rails + expander) |
The oil-control assembly's "cannot be measured" row is the factory being honest about a three-piece design: there is no single surface to measure, so ring health reads out of oil consumption, not a feeler gauge. The pistons-and-rings-install guide owns the gap-clocking law and the file-fit honesty for tuned builds.
Head, seats, guides, valvetrain — 11 12 / 11 31 / 11 34 technical data
| Measurement | Value |
|---|---|
| Head height, original | 112.00 ± 0.05 mm |
| Head machining limit | 111.70 ± 0.05 mm (0.3 mm max cut) |
| Valve seat angle | 45° |
| Correction angle, outer / inner | 15° / 60° |
| Seat width, intake / exhaust | 1.0 +0.1 / 1.2 +0.1 mm |
| Seat Ø, intake / exhaust | 27.7 +0.1 / 26.6 +0.1 mm |
| Valve guide Ø, intake / exhaust (installed) | 5.00–5.02 / 6.00–6.02 mm |
| Valve guides as replacement parts | not available |
| Intake valve head Ø | 31.4 ± 0.05 mm |
| Exhaust valve head Ø | 28.0 ± 0.1 mm |
| Intake stem Ø | 5.0 mm (−0.10/−0.06) |
| Exhaust stem Ø | 6.0 mm (−0.10/−0.06) |
| Camshaft radial runout | 0.054–0.099 mm |
| Camshaft axial (side) clearance | 0.02–0.162 mm |
| Camshaft guide bearing width | 20.000 +0.052 mm |
| Valve clearances | hydraulic — nothing to set |
The two rows builders argue about most are both honest limits, not opinions: the 0.3 mm deck cut before the head is scrap metal (the head-gasket-and-tty-bolts guide owns the compression math that follows a max cut), and "valve guides are not available as replacement parts" — the factory's answer to a worn guide is the exchange-head program, not a press-in part. The valvetrain-and-timing-refresh guide translates the rest into a refresh decision.
Oiling — 11 40 / 11 41 technical data
| Measurement | Value | Chassis scope |
|---|---|---|
| Oil change capacity, with filter | 6.5 litres | E60/E61, E70 (xi), E82/E88/E89, E90–E93, F01/F02 — all carried rows |
| Oil pressure at idle, at operating temperature | ≥ 1.5 bar | N54 B30 |
| Control pressure, at operating temperature | 4.0–6.0 bar | N54 B30 |
Drain plug M12x1.5 | 25 Nm, new sealing ring every time | all |
| Oil filter cap | 25 Nm | all |
The idle floor is a HOT number — oil pressure at idle on a cold-start cold-oil morning runs far higher, and a warm engine that cannot hold 1.5 bar at idle is telling you something the gauge should not talk you out of. The engine-oil-change-guide owns the LL-01 honesty and the overfill warning; the oil-system-prime-and-break-in guide owns what these floors mean on a fresh build's first start.
Cooling and fuel test points — 17 00 / 13 53 technical data
| Measurement | Value | Chassis scope |
|---|---|---|
| Coolant volume, with A/C, MT / AT | 10.0 / 10.4 litres | E60/E61 |
| Coolant volume, with A/C, MT / AT | 8.2 / 8.4 litres | E90–E93 |
| Coolant volume, with heating + A/C, MT / AT | 8.2 / 8.4 litres | E82/E88 (N54) |
| Coolant volume (N54T, E82/E88) | 10.4 litres | both gearboxes |
| Top-up quantity after thermostat R&R | 2.0 litres | all carried chassis |
| Cooling system test pressure (excess) | 1.5 bar | all carried chassis |
| Low-pressure fuel system test pressure | 5.0 bar ± 0.2 | N53/N54 |
The 1.5 bar row is the cooling-system pressure-test ceiling — it is how you find leaks without creating them; the coolant-service-and-bleeding-guide owns the bleed law and the mixture honesty. The 5 bar row is the low-pressure side's leak-down test point, the bookend to the high-pressure fuel diagnostics in the LPFP guide. Per the factory data we hold: the coolant mixture ratio and the exact long-life coolant part specification are referenced, not carried — the fill procedures point to the operating-fluids specification, and that layer is not in our extract.
Ignition — 12 12 torque data
| Fastener | Thread | Torque |
|---|---|---|
| Spark plug, dry thread | M12x1.25 | 23 ± 3 Nm |
| Ignition coil to valve cover | M6 | 8 Nm |
The torque table's condition is "unlubricated" and it means it — the spark-plug-and-coil-guide owns the damage warnings (oiled threads under-torque and work loose; the thread's condition, not the wrench, becomes the spec). Plug gap is honestly not on this page: the torque documents carry no gap for any engine, because the gap lives in the plug's own specification, which our factory extract does not carry. Run the catalog plug as it ships on a stock tune; the plug guide owns the one-step-colder and gapping honesty for tuned cars.
The fastener spine — torque-plus-angle table
Every N54 torque-plus-angle fastener the wiki carries, on one table. Full context, sequences, and the one-time-use laws live in the owning guides; every torque in the wiki is also in the torque-specs-master-index with its owner.
| Fastener | Thread | Torque | Owner |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crankhub central bolt (TTY) | M16x80 12.9 | 100 Nm + 360°, replace, light oil | n54-crankhub-and-timing-guide |
| Damper ring to hub, ASA screws | M8x16 | 35 Nm | n54-crankhub-and-timing-guide |

| Cylinder head bolt (TTY) | M9x95/125 | 30 Nm + 90° + 90° + 45°, replace | head-gasket-and-tty-bolts |
| Connecting rod bolts (TTY) | M9 | 20 Nm + 70° + 70°, replace, oil | rod-and-main-bearings |
| Main bearing bolts | M10x100 10.9 | 20 Nm + 70°, replace | rod-and-main-bearings |
| VANOS adjuster to camshaft bolts | M10x94 | 20 Nm + 180°, replace | n54-crankhub-and-timing-guide |
| Chain tensioner | M22x1.5 | 55 Nm, new ring, no retighten | valvetrain-and-timing-refresh |
Chain tensioner pre-tension (tool 11 9 340 + 00 9 250) | — | 0.6 Nm during timing set | n54-crankhub-and-timing-guide |
| Spark plug, dry | M12x1.25 | 23 ± 3 Nm | spark-plug-and-coil-guide |
| Bedplate screws, aluminum (TTY) | M10x27/41, M8x37 | 15 / 15 / 10 Nm + 90°, replace | rod-and-main-bearings |
| Oil drain plug | M12x1.5 | 25 Nm, new ring | engine-oil-change-guide |
The damper's own limits — 11 23 technical data
| Measurement | Value |
|---|---|
| Max. permitted radial runout | 0.10 mm |
| Max. permitted axial runout | 0.10 mm |
A damper runout check after any hub work is cheap and the limit is generous — but a damper that walks visibly at idle is past a number, not past a feeling. The crankhub guide owns what runout after a hub job usually means: the friction-plate stack, not the damper.
Chassis-count honesty — what this sheet does and does not carry
The capacities tables above carry every chassis row our factory extract holds for the N54: E60/E61, E70 (xi), E82/E88/E89, E90–E93, F01/F02. What the extract does not carry, stated plainly: the N54's power and torque ratings by chassis (the documents we hold are service data, not sales data — we will not quote numbers we cannot cite), the coolant and oil specification part numbers themselves (referenced by the procedures, not included in our layer), and any fixed service interval — the interval system on these cars is condition-based, calculated off fuel burned and duty, and the honest interval conversation lives in the oil guide and the revision loop. For the manual-gearbox oil grade: the transmission capacity document's own grade row reads "refer to operating fluids specifications" — the 7.8-litre initial-fill number for the six-speed manual is carried, the grade routing is honest, and the fluids-and-capacities-bible keeps that split.
The B58's counterpart page is the b58-factory-spec-sheet — the same discipline, that engine's own documents, and its own honest gaps (the B58's bore and stroke are not carried in our extract; its piston, ring, clearance, and fastener data very much is).

What is the oil capacity of the N54?
6.5 litres with the filter element, for every chassis the factory data carries — E60/E61, E70 (xi), E82/E88/E89, E90–E93, and F01/F02. The dipstick or level sensor after a run-and-settle is the final authority; the capacity is the starting point.
What is the N54 compression ratio and compression pressure?
The compression ratio is 10.2:1. Compression pressure is 14–16 bar with a maximum deviation of 2 bar between all cylinders, per the factory technical data for the N54 B30.
What are the N54 main and rod bearing clearances?
Main bearing radial clearance is 0.020–0.046 mm, rod bearing radial clearance 0.025–0.070 mm, crankshaft end play 0.060–0.250 mm — all straight from the factory technical data.
How much torque on the N54 crankhub bolt?
100 Nm plus a full 360° turn on the M16x80 single-use 12.9 central bolt, lightly oiled. The N55/S55 hub bolt is a different fastener — M18x108 at 100 Nm + 270°.
