Oil filter housing gasket: the other classic N54 leak, factory torques included
The N54/N55 oil filter housing gasket job — the factory procedure (plenum, coolant, heat exchanger), the full 25/22/16 Nm torque table, and what our ISTA extract carries per engine.
If the valve cover is the N54's famous leak, the oil filter housing gasket is the quiet one — the one that smears the alternator, the belt, and everything else below the front of the engine with a film that never quite stops. The job hides a surprise for first-timers: the housing bolts to the head behind an oil-to-water heat exchanger, so coolant is part of this oil leak's repair. The factory data covers all of it, with torque tables to match.
What the job actually is
The factory procedure (11 42 020, "full-flow oil filter") is written around the filter element and cap, but its preliminary list is the housing job in disguise:
- Remove the intake plenum.
- Drain the coolant, unlock and detach the coolant hose.
- Remove the oil-to-water heat exchanger.
That last step is why the oil filter housing gasket job starts with a coolant drain, not an oil drain. The heat exchanger (a separate procedure, 11 44 000) hangs off the housing's front face; its gasket and the housing gasket both fail with age, and the teardown order means you disturb both — replace both.
The torque table (N54)
| Fastener | Thread | Torque |
|---|---|---|
| Oil filter cap to oil filter housing | — | 25 Nm (18.4 lb-ft) |
| Oil filter housing to cylinder head | M8 x 78 / M8 x 48 / M8 x 28 | 22 Nm (16.2 lb-ft) |
| Oil-coolant heat exchanger to oil filter housing | M8 x 20 | 16 Nm (11.8 lb-ft) |
| Oil pressure line to crankcase | M8 x 12 | 20 Nm (14.8 lb-ft) |
| Oil feed to exhaust turbocharger | M6 x 12 | 8 Nm (5.9 lb-ft) |
| Oil return to crankcase | M12 x 10 | 20 Nm (14.8 lb-ft) |
The N55 table carries the same big three — cap 25 Nm, housing to head 22 Nm (M8 x 78 / M8 x 43 / M8 x 28), heat exchanger 16 Nm — plus the turbo oil lines at 8 Nm. The S55 matches. The pattern across all three tables: the numbers that matter are 25 / 22 / 16; everything around them is small-fastener discipline.
The cap, the O-rings, and the element
The cap releases with special tool 11 9 240, and the factory note is worth trusting: engine oil flows out of the housing and back to the sump when the cap opens — expect it, catch it. On installation, replace the cap's sealing rings and moisten them with engine oil before the cap goes back at 25 Nm. The filter element itself clicks into the cap audibly; the factory document says exactly that, and an element that did not click is one that walks out of position.
The change-every-time list, from the documents: cap sealing rings, housing gasket, heat exchanger gasket, and the coolant hose seal you unlocked to get here. None of them are reuse items.
Diagnosis: which leak is this?
Three leaks pool in the same front-of-engine neighborhood, and mixing them up buys the wrong weekend:
- **Valve cover gasket** — oil down the back and sides of the head, wet spark plug wells. Our valve-cover guide covers it.
- **Oil filter housing gasket** — oil film around the housing, heat exchanger, and below it; the alternator and belt get sprayed. Cap area wet with the cap properly torqued also points here.
- **Oil-to-water heat exchanger** — the giveaway is coolant-oil intermix evidence: mayo under the cap or in the expansion tank with an otherwise clean engine. This one is a `11 44 000` job on its own.
Coverage notes
What the data carries: complete procedures for the filter/housing job on N54 and N55, the heat-exchanger procedure, and per-engine torque tables for N54, N55, and S55 (all three verified against the factory tables' engine columns). What it does not carry: a B58 equivalent in this catalog's repair set — the B58 oil system uses a different housing arrangement, and forcing these torques onto it would be invention. If your engine is a B58, this page's torque tables are explicitly not for you; verify against your shop manual.
Every number above traces to the ISTA document ids in the sources. The procedures live in ISTA itself — this page is the cheat sheet you keep next to it.
FAQ
- **Why is my oil leak behind a coolant drain?** Because the oil-to-water heat exchanger bolts to the front of the housing — the factory preliminary list drains coolant before the housing can come off.
- **Do I replace the heat exchanger gasket even if it looks fine?** Yes — the teardown removes the exchanger; the torque table treats its fastener as part of the job. A reused heat-exchanger gasket is a second coolant drain in your future.
- **Can I do this without removing the intake plenum?** The factory procedure lists it as preliminary work. Owners report shortcuts; the documents do not.
- **Is 25 Nm really the cap torque? It feels light.** It is the factory number for all three engines in the tables — plastic cap, O-ring seal, no gasket crush. More is not sealing better; more is cracking the cap.
