The S55 started BMW's water-to-air six era: the charge cooler lives in the intake manifold and the heat goes out through a front heat exchanger. This upgraded top-mount charge cooler grows the core volume where the air actually cools — the honest S55 upgrade, versus pretending this platform takes a front-mount intercooler.
