VANOS solenoid service: replacement, cleaning, and the misfire codes
The N54's classic misfire fix — what the factory data actually says about VANOS solenoid valves, the codes that point at them, the swap test, torque specs, and when cleaning is honest.
Rough idle, a misfire code, and a VANOS fault on one bank — on the N54 this trio has sent more solenoid valves to Parts Counter than any other part. The factory data backs the instinct, with limits: ISTA's own test plan for the intake-side code checks wiring first, then the VANOS valves and hydraulics, then camshaft signals — the solenoid is a suspect, not a verdict. Here is what the factory documents carry for this job: the removal procedure with its damage warnings, the torque for the holder screws, and an honest line between the factory procedure and the forum playbook.
The codes, from the factory fault documents
| Code | Factory title | The test plan's order of checks |
|---|---|---|
| 2A82 (P0012) | VANOS intake, camshaft timing over-retarded | Wiring → VANOS valves/hydraulics → camshaft signals |
| 2A87 (P0015) | Exhaust VANOS, mechanism | Same ladder — the "mechanism" wording means it is not assumed electrical |
| P0300 family | Combustion misfires, several cylinders | Misfire cause is upstream — read it with the VANOS codes, not instead of them |
The trigger conditions in the fault document are worth knowing: the intake-side code sets with the system voltage above 10 V, VANOS control active, and a control deviation over 20°. That number matters — a solenoid that is slow but not dead may only flag the code at high deviation, which is why the same car can drive fine cold and fall on its face hot.

The community procedure — swap the intake and exhaust solenoids, clear codes, see which side the fault moves to — is sound electrical logic: if the fault follows the valve, the valve is the part. The factory documents do not spell out this test; they spell out a diagnostic ladder that ends at "check VANOS valves/hydraulic system." Treat the swap test as the cheap first move inside that step, not as a substitute for the ladder's earlier rungs: a chafed wire or a weak oil feed mimics a bad solenoid exactly, and no amount of valve swapping fixes low oil pressure to the VANOS unit.
Torque specs
| Fastener | Thread | Torque | Engine |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solenoid valve holder to cylinder head | M6x12 | 10 Nm (7.4 lb-ft) | N54 |
| Solenoid valve holder to cylinder head | M6x12 | 9 Nm (6.6 lb-ft) | N55 |
| Solenoid valve to cylinder head | M6x12 | 9 Nm (6.6 lb-ft) | S55 |
The removal, factory shape
The full procedure is 11 36 655 (both valves); intake-only and exhaust-only versions exist as 11 36 652 and 11 36 654. The shape:
- Unplug the connectors and free the wiring from its holder — the N55/S55 documents stress protecting the harness.
- Remove the holder screws and lift the holder.
- Withdraw the valves straight out. On N54 the removal note is blunt about cleanliness; on reassembly, moisten the sealing ring with engine oil and do **not** tilt the valves while inserting them — notch or scratch the body and you have bought a new one.
- Insert each valve carefully up to the stop, confirm the correct installation position, fit the screws, torque to the table above.
- Assemble, delete the fault memory, and verify the DME's VANOS control function — the factory procedure ends with a function check, not just a code clear.
Cleaning: what is honest
Cleaning a gummed solenoid (the internet's solvent-and-actuate ritual) can restore a valve whose only fault is varnish — and the factory's own contamination warning implies clean matters. What no factory document carries is a wear limit, a resistance spec you can meter against, or a cleaning procedure. If a cleaned valve does not fix the deviation, the data does not support a second guess: the fault ladder moves on to hydraulics and signals. Oil quality and change intervals are the factory's only stated defense — dirty oil is the contamination the document warns about.
Coverage notes
What the data carries: removal/installation procedures for N54 (three documents), N55, and S55; per-engine holder torques; the fault-code test plans with trigger conditions. What it does not carry: electrical resistance values, flow test specs, failure-mileage statistics, or any factory blessing for the intake↔exhaust swap test — that one stays labeled as forum practice that happens to be good logic. Verify the current-side diagnosis against your shop manual before buying parts off a single stored code.
Every number above traces to the ISTA document ids in the sources. The procedures live in ISTA itself — this page is the cheat sheet you keep next to it.
FAQ
- **Which solenoid do I buy?** The factory documents cover procedure, not part numbers — match the valve to your engine and chassis through the parts catalog, not the fault code alone.
- **Can I drive with a VANOS solenoid code?** The fault documents describe reduced-cam-control operation, not a stop-the-car failure — but a 20°+ control deviation under load is nobody's idea of safe. Fix it before hard pulls.
- **Do both valves need replacing if one tests bad?** The factory procedure replaces per diagnosis. The forum habit of replacing in pairs is defensible on age grounds — call it maintenance, not factory law.
- **Will cleaning alone fix my misfire?** Only if contamination is the cause. The factory ladder exists because wiring, oil supply, and sensor faults all read like a bad solenoid.
