Methanol injection wiring basics
Water-methanol buys back knock margin with a pump, a nozzle, and a controller. The wiring that makes it safe — and the habits that keep it honest.
Water-methanol injection (WMI) is chemical intercooling: a fine spray into the charge air that absorbs heat as it evaporates and adds knock margin when it burns. It's the cheapest octane you can carry — and because it's a consumable with a pump, a tank, and a controller, it's also a system that can fail silently. The wiring is where safety lives.
The system
A WMI kit is a high-pressure pump (Aquatec-class, 200+ psi), a tank, a filter, a solenoid, one or two nozzles, and a controller. On JB4 cars the controller is the FSB (fuel spray boost); flash-only cars typically run an AEM universal progressive controller. Nozzles are rated in GPH at 200 psi: BM5 = 315 ml/min, BM7 = 440, BM10 = 630, BM12 = 750, BM14 = 880.
Placement: after the FMIC, before the throttle body. Spraying before the intercooler is the documented mistake — extreme air temps and poor distribution. Sizing on a six-cylinder: a BM10, or dual BM5s for better atomization and distribution across the plenum.
The wiring
The BMS/JB4 install manual is the reference layout on these cars; the shape generalizes to any controller:
| Connection | Lands on |
|---|---|
| FSB power (red) | Switched +12 V — on N54, the same orange feed that powers the JB4 |
| FSB ground (black) | Chassis ground with the factory ground wires present |
| Blue | JB4 DB25 #15 on N54 (default #16) — pump flow feedback |
| Orange | JB4 DB25 #2 on N54 (default #3) — trigger/duty command |
| Yellow | WMI pump supply (fused) — pump in the trunk |
| Solenoid | One wire FSB green, one wire ground at the solenoid |
| Pump ground | Chassis/battery negative in the trunk |
| Diode | Across the pump (red/black), at the pump |
The points that bite people:
- **Ground quality.** A bad ground can make the system stick on with ignition. Shock-tower bolts are specifically called out as unsuitable grounds — use real chassis metal to bare paint.
- **The trunk is the friend of the install.** Pump near the tank, power run front-to-back is just one fused wire plus the fluid line (through the cabin behind the rear seat, driver's side trim, firewall grommet by the brake booster); grounds land locally at the battery/chassis.
- **Prime and purge on install, and after running dry.** These pumps cavitate and die pulling air; mount the pump low with gravity feed from the tank.
Control and failsafes
The JB4 maps WMI progressively on boost, throttle, RPM, IAT, timing advance, and gear — with pump flow feedback as the safety spine. The flow signal is the whole game:
- Normal system: flow reads around 100% of expected.
- Consistently under ~60%: physical problem — clogged nozzle/filter, kinked line, leaking fitting, air in the pump.
- Never above 10%: settings or electrical problem — no flow signal at all.
When flow drops (empty tank, clog, pump death), the JB4 backs boost down instead of letting the tune lean on knock margin that isn't there. That fail-down is the difference between WMI as a system and WMI as a bet. AEM-based flash-only installs should be configured for the same behavior: trigger tied to boost, and a boost-cut or safety map if flow disappears.
Running WMI alongside port injection is common — drop to a single small nozzle for cooling duty, keep the FSB orange trigger, and the PI controller takes over the fuel-side signal (the port-injection guide has the shared-pin detail).
The fluid
- The tuning reference mix is **49% methanol / 51% water** — the commercial "boost juice" blends. Tune to a known mix and run that mix.
- Windshield washer fluid is an accepted budget substitute **only if blue and rated to −20 °F** (~30% methanol). Guessing at mixtures shifts the tune's assumptions.

Where does the methanol nozzle mount?
In a charge-pipe bung after the intercooler and before the throttle body — never upstream of the intercooler, where air temperatures and flow distribution work against atomization. On six-cylinder BMWs the standard sizing is a BM10 or dual BM5 nozzles; two smaller nozzles atomize and distribute better than one big one.
Can methanol injection damage my engine?
The fluid itself is protective while flowing — the danger is a system that stops flowing while the tune keeps expecting it. That's why flow feedback matters: a controller that sees flow drop and backs boost down turns a silent failure into a non-event.
